PortrAid provides a platform with a straightforward concept: use photography to illustrate problems artistically. The result, a piece of art-work is then sold, with its revenue helping the cause directly. Making art for charity allows us to help people in need by the simple use of their artistic expression. We connect the cause, photographers and people with one click.
PortrAid is an art aided charity project initiated by the ABURY Foundation and Thomas Rusch.
We to use the power and beauty of photography to help others.
PortrAid envisions to contribute to an inclusive world where everyone has access to education and health. We pledge to contribute and support the Social Development Goals of the United Nations, with our focus on:
Project:
Hand spinning and weaving in Ethiopia are century-old skills that were once highly respected. However, because of the increased availability of large-scale manufactured textiles from within the country and abroad, this craft is slowly disappearing. The third edition of PortrAid sets out in a mission to help this issue, one loom per picture. 38 weavers were photographed in Ethiopia by the award-winning photographer Xiomara Bender.
Project:
Education is the basis for a self-determined future, a way out of poverty. While six years of compulsory education are provided everywhere in Morocco, it is also a fact that this is hardly sufficient to change the low level of education predominant in the small villages. 57 children from the Atlas Mountains and their teachers, Lahcen and Mohamed, were photographed by the Berliner photographer Thomas Rusch for this second edition of PortrAid.
Project:
In countries like Morocco, eye cataract is quite a common disease among craftsmen. Due to this eye condition the artisans are unable to do their craft and earn a living.
We wanted to address this problem and help these artisans in a very direct and personal way. For this, the Berlin based artist Thomas Rusch photographed 82 Moroccan artisans suffering from cataract.
